CRIME/DEMS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Friday [8-2-19] to call attention to a break-in at the home of a Baltimore congressman he has been sharply criticizing for days. Trump was referring to reports in Baltimore media that police are investigating a burglary at Rep. Elijah Cummings’ home in West Baltimore that took place on Saturday…Trump has been blasting Cummings and his hometown for days. The broadsides began with a tweet on Saturday in which he described Cummings’ district as a ‘rat and rodent infested mess.’ Baltimore City police confirmed they are investigating a burglary that took place during the early morning hours of July 27 on Cummings’ block in West Baltimore. Both police and Cummings said the burglary occurred about 3:40 a.m., hours before Trump’s tweets directed at the congressman.”

CRIME/DEMS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Trump continued to cast attention on Representative Elijah E. Cummings, the  Maryland Democrat, and his hometown of Baltimore on Friday [8-2-19], after an attempted break-in at the congressman’s home. The Baltimore Police are investigating a burglary at Mr. Cummings’s home last weekend, which occurred hours before Mr. Trump began assailing Mr. Cummings’s congressional district as a rat-infested ‘mess’…The intruder had entered the first-floor hallway of Mr. Cummings’s building at about 3:40 a.m. on Saturday [8-3-19], but did not get into any of the living areas, according to a police report. The intruder, who appeared to be in his 40s, fled on a bicycle when he was confronted by a resident who yelled at him, an officer wrote in the report. No property was stolen and there were no signs of forced entry. Mr. Cummings, who is serving his 13th term in the House, owns a three-story brick row home in West Baltimore.”

CRIME/JUSTICE DEPARTMENT/LEGAL/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Plans by President Donald Trump’s administration to resume executions of inmates sentenced to death for federal crimes is set to face a stiff court challenge, but a judge’s decision on the legality of its new protocol for lethal injections may come too late for five men scheduled to die starting in December. Attorney General William Barr’s July 25 announcement of a single-drug protocol for executing federal prisoners jump-started a long-running civil lawsuit challenging the Justice Department’s capital punishment procedures as a violation of the U.S. Constitution and a federal law governing how regulations are enacted. None of the seven federal death row inmates who are plaintiffs in the lawsuit were among the five selected by Barr for execution, though the legal questions raised in the litigation are directly relevant to those men. The eventual ruling in the suit could come after scheduled new round of executions is carried out on the five men, who were convicted of murder and other charges. The last federal execution took place in 2003.”

ATTORNEY GENERAL/CRIME/JUSTICE DEPARTMENT/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The federal government has ordered the death penalty to be reinstated for the first time in nearly two decades, as Attorney General William Barr directed the Bureau of Prisons to schedule the execution of five inmates after adopting an updated execution protocol. After 16 years without an execution, Barr has directed the head of the Bureau of Prisons to execute ‘five death-row inmates convicted of murdering, and in some cases torturing and raping, the most vulnerable in our society — children and the elderly’ in December and January, according to a statement from the Department of Justice. In his statement, Barr said the government was moving to seek justice against the ‘worst criminals’ and bring relief to victims and family members. At the same time, however, the government’s move is likely to reignite legal challenges to the specific protocol and reinvigorate a debate concerning the constitutionality of lethal injection.”

CAMPAIGN/CRIME/LEGAL/LOBBYING/MICHAEL FLYNN/NATIONAL SECURITY/TRUMP PEOPLE: “A federal jury on Tuesday [7-22-19] convicted Bijan Rafiekian, a former business partner of Michael Flynn, on a pair of foreign-agent felony charges stemming from work the two men did for Turkish interests during the final months of the Trump presidential campaign in 2016. The verdicts, returned by jurors in Alexandria, Va., after a weeklong trial and only about four hours of deliberation, amount to a belated courtroom victory for special counsel Robert Mueller, who investigated the $600,000 lobbying and public relations contract at the heart of the case and then handed the matter off to other federal prosecutors after Flynn’s guilty plea to a false-statement charge in 2017. Rafiekian, 67, faces up to 15 years in prison on the two felony counts against him: acting as an unregistered foreign agent in the U.S., and conspiracy to violate that law as well as to submit false statements to the Justice Department in a foreign-agent filing. Defendants are typically sentenced in accord with federal sentencing guidelines that result in far less than the maximum.”

AFRICAN AMERICANS/CRIME/LEGAL/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Trump said on Tuesday [6-18-19] that he would not apologize for his harsh comments in 1989 about the Central Park Five, the five black and Latino men who as teenagers were wrongly convicted of the brutal rape of a jogger in New York City. Mr. Trump was asked about newspaper advertisements he bought back then calling for New York State to adopt the death penalty after the attack. (The ads never explicitly called for the death penalty for the five defendants.) ‘You have people on both sides of that,’ he said at the White House. ‘They admitted their guilt’…Mr. Trump’s remarks about the Central Park Five were strikingly similar to comments he made in reaction to the deadly violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017. A woman was killed after a driver slammed his vehicle into counterprotesters. At the time, the president said, ‘There was blame on both sides.’ In 1989, Mr. Trump placed full-page advertisements in four New York City newspapers, including The New York Times, calling for the state to adopt the death penalty for killers. He made clear that he was voicing this opinion because of the rape and assault of Trisha Meili, a woman who had been jogging in Central Park.”

AFRICAN AMERICANS/CELEBS/CRIME/LABOR/LEGISLATION/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Trump on Thursday [6-13-19] took another turn advertising his administration’s work on criminal justice, one of the only bipartisan achievements he can campaign on and an issue he hopes will win over at least some African-American and centrist white voters. Mr. Trump praised the First Step Act, as the law is known, as one of his major accomplishments. It was the third time he has commemorated it at the White House, where he also announced new government initiatives intended to encourage businesses to hire former inmates. He said that the Bureau of Prisons would work with employers to have jobs lined up for inmates upon their release, and that the Labor Department was awarding $2 million to states to support fidelity bonds, which help underwrite companies that hire former prisoners. The president singled out Kim Kardashian West, the reality television star who has become a high-profile advocate for reducing criminal sentences, who sat in the audience sandwiched between his daughter Ivanka Trump and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, for pushing the administration to tackle the subject.”

CRIME/ELECTION/JOE BIDEN/MINORITIES/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT:  “President Donald Trump on Monday [5-27-19] criticized former Vice President Joe Biden for his involvement in passing the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act…Biden, who chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time, did play a central role in getting the 1994 bill passed, and it has loomed over his presidential bid, with critics saying the bill generated mass incarceration that disproportionately affected minorities…However, Biden has defended the bill and his role in passing it, and denied that it resulted in mass incarceration, though former President Bill Clinton apologized in 2015 for signing the bill into law, saying he ‘made the problem worse.’ Biden has already been criticized by other 2020 presidential contenders from his own party for his support of the bill, including Sen. Kamala Harris and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who called Biden’s work on the bill ‘a huge mistake’ during an appearance on CNN’s ‘State of the Union’ on Sunday.”
