GOP/IMPEACHMENT/SENATE/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The U.S. Senate remained at a stalemate on Friday [1-3-20] over how to proceed with the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, as the chamber’s leaders wrangled over whether White House aides will be called as witnesses and the top Democrat appealed to a handful of Republicans who could help break the impasse. After a two-week holiday recess, there was still no clarity about when Trump’s impeachment trial might begin. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, said that in any case the trial could not start without the articles of impeachment, which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has not yet sent to the Senate. The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives voted in December to impeach Trump for pressuring Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a potential rival in the 2020 presidential election.”

GOP/IMPEACHMENT/SENATE/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP PEOPLE: “The Republican businesswoman who will soon become Georgia’s newest U.S. senator said Thursday [1-2-20] she plans to vote against removing President Donald Trump from office. Kelly Loeffler is scheduled to be sworn in when the Senate convenes Monday in Washington. Her first vote she casts as a senator could come at the conclusion of Trump’s impeachment trial on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Trump is expected to be acquitted by the GOP-controlled Senate , where a two-thirds vote is necessary for conviction. On social media and in a recent newspaper op-ed column, Loeffler has criticized impeachment proceedings in the Democrat-controlled House as a ‘sham,’ a ‘sideshow’ and a “distraction.” Speaking to reporters Thursday after a tour of the Port of Savannah, she confirmed that she intends to vote “No” on removing Trump from office.”

GOP/HOUSE OF REPS/IMPEACHMENT/SENATE/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The White House is actively exploring a way to give President Donald Trump’s staunchest House allies a public role in the upcoming Senate impeachment trial, according to five sources familiar with the matter, as the president looks to mount an aggressive defense in the upper chamber. One idea under consideration is to allow a collection of House Republicans — who would be fresh off defending Trump in the House — to present a minority report on the Ukraine affair and make their case on the Senate floor, similar to the role Democratic impeachment managers are expected to play in the trial. The idea has been under discussion for several weeks, according to one GOP member familiar with the talks. Some of the names in the mix include Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Mark Meadows of North Carolina, two of Trump‘s closest allies, as well as Rep. John Ratcliffe of Texas, a former prosecutor who sits on both the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees.”

BRETT KAVANAUGH/GOP/IMPEACHMENT/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Donald Trump is on the verge of becoming just the third U.S. president to be impeached. But his allies couldn’t care less about this week’s history-making, legacy-shaping vote. Instead, they’re singularly focused on the vote that will come on Nov. 3, 2020 — and already choreographing an election strategy that capitalizes on impeachment itself. Together, Trump’s reelection team and the RNC have spent $11 million on impeachment-related ads since the inquiry began on Sept. 24, and they plan to drop another $350,000 on advertising this week, according to the RNC…Together, Trump’s reelection team and the RNC have spent $11 million on impeachment-related ads since the inquiry began on Sept. 24, and they plan to drop another $350,000 on advertising this week, according to the RNC.”

GOP/INVESTIGATIONS/LEGAL/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP PEOPLE: “Twenty former Republican lawmakers, officials and legal experts are urging a federal appeals court to reject President Donald Trump’s claim that his former White House counsel, Don McGahn, can ignore a House subpoena. The slate of prominent GOP figures is arguing that the country’s founders did not intend for presidents and their advisers to enjoy such untrammeled authority to reject congressional oversight. House Democrats are pushing for McGahn to testify about episodes that special counsel Robert Mueller investigated as potential obstruction of justice. While many right-leaning lawyers like Attorney General Bill Barr have asserted that the founders’ view of the Constitution mandates an expansive, muscular view of executive authority and executive privilege, the new friend-of-the-court brief argues that a truly ‘originalist’ view of the showdown calls for the courts to force McGahn to appear, especially given the ongoing impeachment fight.”

ELECTION/GOP/IMPEACHMENT/JARED KUSHNER/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Hours before the House Judiciary Committee was set to take a historic vote to push President Trump to the brink of impeachment, campaign officials gathered across the Potomac River for a state-of-the-race briefing in which they described how the Republican Party had been transformed into the ‘beer and bluejeans party’ crafted in Mr. Trump’s image…Mr. Kushner said that the Republican Party was being redefined with the ‘old guard cycling out’ and that ‘a lot of people coming in are inspired by the Trump revolution.’ Despite the impeachment inquiry, Mr. Kushner said that revolution still included a new appeal to former Democrats like himself.”

GOP/HOUSE OF REPS/IMPEACHMENT/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “A fiercely divided House Judiciary Committee approved two articles of impeachment against President Trump on Friday [12-13-19], setting up a historic vote before the full House that would make him only the third president to be impeached. The impeachment articles, passed over sharp Republican protests, accused the president of abusing the power of his office and obstructing Congress. The votes and a fractious two-day debate preceding them reflected the realities of the hyperpartisan divisions in American politics that have grown wider during Mr. Trump’s three years in office. With back-to-back votes shortly after 10 a.m., the Democratic-controlled committee recommended that the House ratify the articles of impeachment against the 45th president, over howls of Republican protest. Each passed, 23 to 17, along strictly partisan lines.”

GOP/TRADE DEALS/TRUMP PEOPLE/USMCA: “Most Republicans are jumping for joy now that the Trump administration has finally clinched a new North American trade deal with House Democrats. Not Sen. Pat Toomey. The conservative Pennsylvanian lambasted the deal on Tuesday [12-10-19] as a potential drag on the economy and a capitulation to Democratic labor demands, becoming by far its most outspoken GOP opponent. Toomey’s criticism comes right as President Donald Trump prepares for an event in Hershey, Pa., on Tuesday night where he’s sure to tout the deal…Toomey argued the GOP should have passed the deal while it still had control of the House instead of spending months negotiating with Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Democratic demands.”

DEMS/GOP/IMPEACHMENT/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The impeachment of President Donald Trump is almost at hand. House Democrats are just days from unveiling formal charges that Trump abused his power, and on Monday [12-9-19] they made a final pitch to Americans that he deserves to be removed from office for it…The presentation of evidence to the Judiciary Committee was in many ways a formality in the House’s broader impeachment push. But it served as a chance for Democrats to summarize the complicated case against Trump one last time — and provided Republicans another shot to defend him in public. Democrats argue that Trump pressured Ukraine to investigate his political rivals, conditioning military aid and a White House visit for an ally fighting a war against Russia in exchange for probes to aid his 2020 re-election bid.”

Doug Collins, the ranking Republican on the committee, sent Nadler a letter today requesting eight witnesses, including House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden, the anonymous whistleblower and anyone the whistleblower relied on to prepare the complaint alleging Trump solicited election interference from Ukraine.”

DEMS/GOP/IMPEACHMENT/NANCY PELOSI/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Democrats are injecting an urgent new argument into their already fast-moving impeachment drive: President Donald Trump poses such a flagrant threat to American governance and democracy that there is no time to waste…The emerging Democratic gambit is prompting Trump’s GOP defenders — who have long struggled to coalesce around a coherent strategy of their own — to launch a fresh counterattack, warning that a rush to condemn the President proves the case against him is shallow and politically motivated. The President himself appeared to contradict that defense Thursday [12-5-19] morning, tweeting, ‘if you are going to impeach me, do it now, fast, so we can have a fair trial in the Senate, and so that our Country can get back to business.’”
