CHILDREN/CLIMATE CHANGE/CYBERBULLYING/MELANIA/SOCIAL MEDIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Melania Trump, who last year promoted anti-cyberbullying tips as part of her child-focused kindness campaign called ‘Be Best,’ sidestepped any comment Friday [12-13-19] on President Trump’s recent decision to mock Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old climate activist, on Twitter. ‘Be Best’ is the first lady’s initiative, and she will continue to use it to do all she can to help children,’ Stephanie Grisham, the White House press secretary, said in a statement first reported by CNN. ‘It is no secret that the president and first lady often communicate differently — as most married couples do.’ A day earlier, Mr. Trump targeted Ms. Thunberg after Time magazine named her its person of the year. ‘So ridiculous,’ Mr. Trump said on Twitter. ‘Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Greta, Chill!’”

CHILDREN/HEALTHCARE/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The number of uninsured children ballooned by more than 400,000 between 2016 and 2018, an unprecedented decline in health coverage for the youngest Americans, a new study has found. Roughly 4.1 million children were uninsured in 2018, up from a low of 3.6 million in 2016, according to the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, citing US Census Bureau data. Their uninsured rate jumped to 5.2% last year, up from 4.7% in 2016. Another Census study shows a similar increase, with the uninsured rate for kids increasing to 5.5% last year, up from 5.0% two years earlier. The trend is particularly troubling because it comes during a period of economic growth when more Americans are gaining employment, said Joan Alker, the center’s executive director. She fears even more children will lose coverage if the economy falters…The national uninsured rate for all Americans also rose last year for the first time in nearly a decade, according to the Census Bureau.”

CHILDREN/CLIMATE CHANGE/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/UN: “President Donald Trump mocked 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg on Twitter late Monday [9-23-19]. Posting a fatalistic statement the Swedish teen had made earlier Monday at the United Nations’ special meeting on climate change, Trump tweeted: “She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!’ Trump briefly attended the Climate Action Summit in New York but left after 14 minutes. The president has consistently expressed skepticism about the notion of man-made climate change, and his administration has declined to make the issue any sort of priority. Thunberg acknowledged Trump’s tweet on Tuesday [9-24-19], changing her Twitter biography to read, ‘A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future.’ Thunberg has developed an international following for her persistent efforts to get the international community to combat climate change, particularly winning support among young people.”

CHILDREN/EPA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The Environmental Protection Agency has decided against a ban of the widely-used pesticide chlorpyrifos, which critics say is associated with neurological problems in children. The agency concluded there is not sufficient evidence of the chemical’s dangers to justify the ban requested by environmental groups and a group of states. Those groups cast the decision as another example of the Trump administration siding with industry…Critics say science shows chlorpyrifos is associated with neurological conditions in farm workers and their children. The agency banned chlorpyrifos for household uses in 2000, but allowed agricultural producers to continue using it. That decision has been challenged through petitions and in the courts since 2007. Last summer, a federal court ordered the EPA to review the petition, and after a review of that decision, the agency was given 90 days in April to make a determination, culminating in Thursday’s [7-18-19] decision.”

CHILDREN/EPA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday [7-18-19] said it will not ban the use of the pesticide chlorpyrifos, which has been linked to health issues in children, from use on U.S.-grown fruits and vegetables. The agency denied the petition by a dozen environmental groups, led by Earthjustice, to ban the pesticide. They said studies show that exposures to the pesticide is liked to low birth weight, reduced IQ, attention disorders and other issues in infants and children. The Obama administration’s EPA had banned the use of chlorpyrifos in 2015 after it decided it could not be certain whether exposure to the chemical in food and water would be harmful. But Trump’s first EPA administrator, Scott Pruitt, reversed that decision in 2017, prompting an ongoing legal battle. In April, the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the EPA had until mid-July to decide whether to reverse Pruitt’s overturn of the ban on chlorpyrifos.”

CHILDREN/IMMIGRATION/LATINOS/RACISM/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/WOMEN: “The United States 2016 election, when President Donald Trump was voted into office, may have been tied to a rise in premature births among Latina women across the US, according to a new study. In the nine months beginning with November 2016, about 3.2% to 3.6% more preterm births to Latina women occurred above the levels of preterm births that would have been expected had the election not occurred, suggests the study, published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open on Friday [7-19-19]. Birth outcomes have long been used in medical research as indicators of acute stress among populations of women, and preterm birth in particular is linked with maternal stress, the researchers noted in their study…The study showed only an association between premature births among Latina women and the election, not that the election directly caused any negative birth outcomes. To determine that, more research would be needed.”

BORDER/CHILDREN/IMMIGRATION/LEGAL/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP PEOPLE: “The House Judiciary Committee will vote this week to authorize a bevy of new subpoenas on the Trump administration’s practice of separating children from their families at the border and on President Trump’s possible obstruction of justice, summoning some of the biggest names to surface in Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation. The votes, scheduled for Thursday [7-11-19], will jolt two of the Democrats’ highest-profile oversight investigations into Mr. Trump and his administration, and are certain to further inflame relations with the White House. Among the targets are Jeff Sessions, the former attorney general; Michael T. Flynn, the president’s first national security adviser; John F. Kelly, the former White House chief of staff; Rod J. Rosenstein, the former deputy attorney general who appointed Mr. Mueller as the special counsel; Corey R. Lewandowski, Mr. Trump’s former campaign manager; and David J. Pecker, who as the head of American Media took part in a hush-money scheme.”

BORDER/CHILDREN/DEMS/DHS/IMMIGRATION/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The House Homeland Security Committee broke out in a skirmish today after Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-Ill.) accused the Trump administration of intentionally killing immigrant children at the border. Underwood’s comments — in which she said a recent string of child deaths were ‘intentional’ and a ‘policy change’ — came during the testimony of acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan…Republicans quickly jumped on Underwood’s comments, arguing that she violated House rules that prevent members from impugning a witness. After repeating her comments a second time, Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) briefly gaveled out the committee amid protests. When the committee returned, it voted 9-7 to strike Underwood’s comments from the record. The controversy came two days after a 16-year-old Guatemalan boy died in custody near Hidalgo, Texas — the fifth migrant child to due in U.S. custody since December.”

CHILDREN/HUD/IMMIGRATION/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Margarita knows what it’s like to not have a home. She bounced from shelter to shelter in New York City, just her and her two children, for nearly a decade. Although her children were born in the United States, Margarita, 48, is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, and her status has added to the family’s struggle to gain a foothold in the city, where she works as a housekeeper. But in August, they qualified for an affordable public housing apartment in the Bronx…Soon, they could lose it all again. The Trump administration proposed a rule last month that would prohibit families from obtaining subsidized housing, including apartments operated by the New York City Housing Authority, if any family member is undocumented…The proposed rule would target, and most likely displace, about 2,800 immigrant families in New York City who live in public housing or receive rental subsidies from the federal government, according to data provided to The New York Times by the city. In total, about 11,400 people in the city could be evicted from their homes, almost half of them children. Nationwide, more than 108,000 people — mostly in California, Texas and New York — would be affected, according to internal analysis from HUD.”

BORDER/CHILDREN/JOHN KELLY/TRUMP PEOPLE: “Former White House chief of staff and retired Marine Gen. John Kelly has joined the board of directors for Caliburn International, the parent company of Comprehensive Health Services, which operates shelters for unaccompanied migrant children. One of the shelters the company operates is Homestead, a temporary influx facility in Florida that houses unaccompanied migrant children. …Kelly served as Trump’s chief of staff until the end of last year, a tumultuous tenure that ended with Kelly exiting while no longer being on speaking terms with the President. The former general was seen as a largely stabilizing force within the administration, but did manage to stir up controversy by insulting Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson of Florida and some recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Kelly’s ties to family separations date to when he served as secretary of Homeland Security under Trump. He confirmed in 2017 that the department was considering separating children from their parents at the border.”

BORDER/CHILDREN/IMMIGRATION/LAWSUIT/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The Trump administration and the plaintiffs in an ongoing family separation class action lawsuit appear to have agreed Thursday [4-25-19] on how the government will identify potentially thousands of additional immigrant families US authorities separated at the southern border, setting up a new phase in the case. The two sides had previously submitted competing proposals on how the process would unfold, leading US District Judge Dana Sabraw to direct them back to the drawing board. Shortly before the hearing in the Southern District of California, the government and plaintiffs had filed court documents describing how they thought the identifications should take place. One of the points of contention had been the timing — the government said the process could take up to two years given the painstaking nature of the task, while the plaintiffs argued it could be done faster. Sabraw said he will issue an order requiring the government to complete the identification process within six months.”

BORDER/CHILDREN/DHS/IMMIGRATION/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Donald Trump says he’s not looking to reinstate the much-criticized practice of separating migrant families at the border with Mexico. But he says many more migrants are streaming toward the U.S. through Mexico because the practice is no longer in place. Says Trump: ‘I’m the one that stopped it.’ He claims his predecessor, President Barack Obama, is the one who separated children from their families. Trump ended the practice under pressure last year after footage of scores of migrant children housed in fenced-off cages at border facilities was broadcast widely. Trump’s allies are pressing for a harder line on immigration after he cleaned house at the Homeland Security Department. Trump says ‘once you don’t have it,’ meaning the family separation policy, ‘that’s why you see many more people coming.’”
