MEDIA/TRUMP PEOPLE: “By the time the furor over a presidential aide accused of spousal abuse reached week two, the White House account of what happened became less clear, not more. The contradictions were multiplying. The daily news briefing was filled with caveats…
The rule of thumb for crisis communications in any White House is to get a complete and accurate account of events out quickly, if for no other reason than to keep a negative story from lasting longer than it otherwise might. But President Trump’s White House has thrown out the rule book in so many ways. The continuing questions about Rob Porter, the staff secretary who resigned after being accused of abusing two former wives, have provided a case study in how shifting stories can make matters worse…
Critics say the conflicting accounts stem from the top, from a president who has made so many false statements or given so many contradictory versions of the truth in so many instances that even his own advisers cannot trust him… This is not the first White House where that has happened, of course, but lessons from past experience suggest why it can be corrosive.”

FAKE NEWS/MEDIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “So many positive things going on for the U.S.A. and the Fake News Media just doesn’t want to go there. Same negative stories over and over again! No wonder the People no longer trust the media, whose approval ratings are correctly at their lowest levels in history! #MAGA”

MEDIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: ” ‘My view is that not only has Trump been vindicated in the last several weeks about the mishandling of the Dossier and the lies about the Clinton/DNC Dossier, it shows that he’s been victimized. He’s been victimized by the Obama Administration who were using all sorts of… agencies, not just the FBI & DOJ, now the State Department to dig up dirt on him in the days leading up to the Election. Comey had conversations with Donald Trump, which I don’t believe were accurate…he leaked information (corrupt).’ Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch on @FoxNews”

FAKE NEWS/GOP/MEDIA: “Led by President Donald Trump, Republicans have railed repeatedly against the New York Times, Washington Post and CNN—but, as a group, they trust mainstream sites like those more than ‘fake news’ sites or even highly partisan outlets like Breitbart and InfoWars, according to a Yale study that directly mirrored the methodology being used by Facebook to identify ‘trusted’ sites. By the same token, Democrats hold a definitively dim view of Fox News, but still rate it as more trustworthy than most fake and hyper-partisan sites.
The Yale study, published on Tuesday [2-6-18], suggests that as Facebook conducts its own surveys, designed to help the massive social network rank its own newsfeeds, mainstream media organizations could get a boost over fake and highly partisan sites. The authors of the Yale study – psychologists David Rand and Gordon Pennycock – said their findings suggest that Facebook may have developed a highly effective tool for weeding out false or deliberately misleading content. But the authors warned that they knew too little about how Facebook would use the information to be able to say for sure. Based on publicly available information, they said Facebook may be taking the wrong approach… In their study, Rand and Pennycook asked more than a thousand people to assess the trustworthiness of 60 different news sites—20 mainstream, 20 ‘hyper-partisan,’ like Breitbart, InfoWars and Daily Kos, and 20 ‘fake news’—using the exact same language that Facebook employs in its surveys. The study, which is not yet peer-reviewed, was performed over Amazon Mechanical Turk, a crowdsourcing marketplace often used to perform academic surveys.
The authors found that trust ratings for fake and hyper-partisan sites were significantly lower than mainstream outlets—as long as all trust ratings were included, regardless of whether the respondent had heard of the site… The downside to such an approach, Rand acknowledged, would be making it more difficult for new or credible but lesser-known sites to break through. A Facebook spokesperson contested Rand and Pennycook’s conclusion, saying that users could not assess the trustworthiness of a news outlet if they’ve never heard of it.”

HUD/MEDIA: “A Housing and Urban Development official with strong ties to the President has apologized for calling a member of the press ‘Miss Piggy’ on Twitter Wednesday [1-24-18] night.
‘I hear #MissPiggys still on a rampage. Gee, I must’ve struck a nerve, @AprilDRyan! #BankruptBlogger,’ Lynne Patton, the HUD administrator for a region which encompasses New York and New Jersey, tweeted from her personal account on Wednesday.
The now-deleted tweet was aimed at April Ryan, the Washington bureau chief of American Urban Radio Networks who also is a CNN political analyst.
Later that evening, she said she deleted the tweet ‘by choice.’… The deleted tweet was part of a larger Twitter spat between the two that began on Tuesday. HUD did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.
Patton has had close ties to President Donald Trump and his family for years. Prior to HUD, she had worked with the Trumps since 2009, taking on roles with the Trump family and the Eric Trump Foundation. On the campaign trail, she assisted Trump with minority outreach and spoke at the Republican National Convention.”

DONALDISM/ETHICS/MEDIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Every awards show has its critics, but President Donald Trump’s much ballyhooed ‘Fake News Awards’ has drawn attention from a group beyond the usual peanut gallery: ethics experts who say the event could run afoul of White House rules and, depending on what exactly the president says during the proceedings, the First Amendment.
The White House has not yet said what form the awards presentation, scheduled by Trump for Wednesday [1-17-18], may take. But Norman Eisen, the former special counsel for ethics for President Barack Obama, and Walter Shaub, the former head of the Office of Government Ethics, have both tweeted that if White House staff members were involved, they would be in violation of the executive branch’s Standards of Ethical Conduct, which ban employees from using their office for ‘the endorsement of any product, service or enterprise.’
Richard Painter, an ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration, agreed, telling POLITICO that there were plenty of valid reasons for executive branch employees to use their position to criticize private enterprises — if a bus company were violating federal safety regulations, for instance — but that helping put on an event to bash the media would not qualify… The president is not subject to the executive branch ethical standards, but all other White House staffers are. Ethics experts say that if the undertaking were carried out exclusively by political staff from the Trump campaign or the Republican National Committee — and not government employees in the White House — there would be no problem…
The White House did not respond to questions asking whether any staff members would be involved. The Republican National Committee also did not respond to requests for comment.”

FAKE NEWS/MEDIA/NORTH KOREA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The Wall Street Journal stated falsely that I said to them ‘I have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un’ (of N. Korea). Obviously I didn’t say that. I said ‘I’d have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un,’ a big difference. Fortunately we now record conversations with reporters… and they knew exactly what I said and meant. They just wanted a story. FAKE NEWS!”

FAKE NEWS/MEDIA: “So much Fake News is being reported. They don’t even try to get it right, or correct it when they are wrong. They promote the Fake Book of a mentally deranged author, who knowingly writes false information. The Mainstream Media is crazed that WE won the election!”

FAKE NEWS/MEDIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the ‘fake news awards’ he teased recently will be postponed, saying interest had exceeded his expectations.
‘The Fake News Awards, those going to the most corrupt & biased of the Mainstream Media, will be presented to the losers on Wednesday, January 17th, rather than this coming Monday,’ the president wrote on Twitter. ‘The interest in, and importance of, these awards is far greater than anyone could have anticipated!’
Trump has long sought to use the media as his foil and has bestowed the ‘fake news’ term liberally on unflattering stories throughout his time in office. Late night comedians have delighted in the spectacle of campaigning for the honors.
Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’ took out a full-page ad in The New York Times with a for-your-consideration appeal along the lines of the pricey campaigns movie studios use to pitch their films and actors for Academy Awards. TBS’ ‘Full Frontal with Samantha Bee’ tweeted an ad pushing the show for ‘shrillest reporting,’ and Stephen Colbert hawked his CBS late night show, tweeting that he was ‘so excited’ for the ‘Fakies’ and purchasing a billboard in Times Square.
It is unclear what the White House actually has planned for Jan. 17.”

DEMS/DONALD ON DONALD/FAKE NEWS/MEDIA/RUSSIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Now that Russian collusion, after one year of intense study, has proven to be a total hoax on the American public, the Democrats and their lapdogs, the Fake News Mainstream Media, are taking out the old Ronald Reagan playbook and screaming mental stability and intelligence…Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart. Crooked Hillary Clinton also played these cards very hard and, as everyone knows, went down in flames. I went from VERY successful businessman, to top T.V. Star…to President of the United States (on my first try). I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius….and a very stable genius at that!”

LEGAL/MEDIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Even as President Trump threatened to block the publication of a book detailing his slapdash approach to the presidency, his White House is scheduled to receive a cinematic, if belated, lesson on the failed precedent of prior restraint on the American press.
This particular lesson stars Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.
Setting what is likely to be a landspeed record for stranger-than-fiction irony, the White House has requested and received permission to screen ‘The Post.’ The movie recounts the Nixon administration’s attempts to stop newspapers from publishing portions of a classified government study about the Vietnam War…
It came as Mr. Trump attacked Michael Wolff, the author of ‘Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,’ as well as the writer’s sources, including Stephen K. Bannon, the president’s former chief strategist. Mr. Trump also threatened legal action against Mr. Wolff’s publisher, Henry Holt & Company. (So far, that threat has backfired into good business for both author and publisher.)…
The White House had no comment on the film schedule. Its request was confirmed by a representative for Fox Movies, the film’s distributor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he said he was not authorized to speak about such agreements.”

FAKE NEWS/MEDIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “After a year of berating the mainstream media, President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday that he will be presenting ‘awards’ Monday [1-8-18] to what he considers to be the worst of the worst…
It is unclear how the president intends to carry out the unprecedented gesture against the news media. But in November, Trump floated the idea of awarding a ‘fake news trophy’ to media outlets to mark their ‘distorted’ coverage of his presidency…
The president has frequently lambasted the media for what he has cast as biased reporting, routinely dismissing damaging reports about his administration as ‘fake news’ and accusing journalists of being tied to the Democratic Party.
Trump offered a back-handed to the newly named publisher of the New York Times A.G. Sulzberger earlier Tuesday, reigniting his public feud with the newspaper he gave an exclusive interview to the week prior…
President Trump has frequently singled out the Times, the Washington Post, CNN and other outlets for criticism of their reporting on the White House.”
