LEGAL/MEDIA/RUSSIA: “Russian lawmakers advanced a bill Wednesday that would allow the government to designate international media outlets as ‘foreign agents,’ a retaliatory move after Kremlin-backed network RT was required to register as a foreign agent in the U.S. this week.
Legislators in the Duma, Russia’s lower house of parliament, voted unanimously Wednesday [11-15-17] to amend existing law to impose new requirements on foreign media operating in Russia. The legislation takes broad aim at international news organizations, saying a media outlet can be designated as a ‘foreign agent’ if it receives funding in any form from outside Russia.
The measure awaits review by Russia’s Senate, the Federation Council, and signature by Russian President Vladimir Putin before it becomes law. Viktoria Rozhkova, chief of the Duma press service, said the measure would be reviewed by the Federation Council on Nov, 22, unless approved in an earlier session.
The new legislation follows swiftly on promises from the Russian government to retaliate over a U.S. Department of Justice request that RT register under the Foreign Agent Registration Act, or FARA, originally passed by Congress in 1938 to counter covert Nazi propaganda efforts before World War II.”

DONALD ON DONALD/MEDIA: “President Donald Trump touted his Ivy League education on Wednesday [10-25-17], highlighting his experiences as a college student nearly 50 years ago as proof that the media is reporting a false image of the 71-year-old president…
‘You know, people don’t understand. I went to an Ivy League college,’ said Trump, who graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. ‘I was a nice student. I did very well. I’m a very intelligent person. You know, the fact is, I think, I really believe, I think the press creates a different image of Donald Trump than the real person.’
Trump did not elaborate on the apparent correlation between education and civility. But the president did accuse the media of reporting ‘fake stories’ and ‘a lot of bad things’ he said are untrue. He did not specify what stories he considered fake or untrue…
Trump repeatedly insisted that the Republican Party is unified, telling reporters that the GOP has ‘pretty good,’ ‘great’ and ‘tremendous’ unity, despite the president’s public feuds with Republican lawmakers. He tweeted Wednesday morning, for example, that two sitting Republican senators who have been critical of him ‘had zero chance of being elected’ in 2018 but are acting ‘so hurt & wounded!’ “

MEDIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Donald Trump is scheduled to sit down for an interview with Fox Business Network’s Lou Dobbs at 7 p.m. Wednesday [10-25-17] night, marking the 16th time that the president has been interviewed on a Fox television network, a preference unprecedented in the history of presidential TV interviews.
By contrast, he has appeared three times as president on NBC or MSNBC, once on CBS News, once on ABC news, and zero times on CNN, according to the count of Mark Knoller, a CBS News White House correspondent who has been tracking presidential press appearances since the Clinton administration. Trump has also given two interviews to the Christian Broadcast Network and one to Mike Huckabee—whose daughter serves as his press secretary—on the Trinity Broadcasting Network…
Kumar pointed out that Trump has done an increased number of short Q&A’s with reporters lately, which does alleviate some of the imbalance of him appearing so much on Fox. ‘I think that is an important tempering aspect of his focus on Fox,’ she said. ‘When he’s dealing with Fox, he’s dealing with his base. When he’s dealing with the pool of reporters, he’s dealing with the public beyond his base.’
A White House official did not respond immediately to request for comment.”

MEDIA/JOHN KELLY/TRUMP PEOPLE: “White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said something during her daily press briefing Friday [10-20-17] that actually took my breath away.
CBS News’ Chip Reid asked Sanders about a factual inaccuracy in White House chief of staff and retired Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly’s attack on Florida Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson on Thursday. Here’s how Sanders responded:
‘If you want to go after General Kelly, that is up to you. If you want to get into a debate with a four-star Marine general, I think that is something highly inappropriate.’
Just in case you don’t get what Sanders is suggesting, it’s something like this: General Kelly is a highly decorated soldier. As such, questioning things that he says is ‘highly inappropriate.’
That’s not how democracy works. Not at all. In fact, it’s the opposite of how democracy works.
Start here: General Kelly’s military service and the sacrifices he and his family have made for our country are beyond question. It is impossible to suggest otherwise.
But that military service does not mean that questioning Kelly’s statements is wrong or inappropriate. Quite the opposite! Kelly is the chief of staff to the President of the United States. He is, in that role, arguably the second or third most powerful person in the country. A person with that sort of power must be held to account for what he says and how he acts.”

MEDIA/MILITARY/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP PEOPLE: “White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Rep. Frederica Wilson’s conduct regarding President Donald Trump’s call with Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, is ‘appalling and disgusting.’
‘I think it is appalling what the congresswoman has done and the way she has politicized this issue and the way she is trying to make this about something that it isn’t,’ Sanders said Wednesday [10-18-17]. ‘This was a President who loves our country very much, who has the greatest level of respect for men and women in uniform and wanted to call and offer condolences to the family.’…
The Florida Democrat was in the car during the call and was the first to tell reporters that Trump offended the family during the call.
Sanders also said there is no recording of Trump’s call with Johnson’s widow. Her husband was among the four soldiers killed in Niger.
Asked if there was a recording of the call, Sanders said: ‘No.’
‘No, but there were several people in the room from the administration that were on the call, including the chief of staff, John Kelly,’ Sanders said.”
