ETHICS/GOLF/SCOTLAND/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP BUSINESS/TRUMP FAMILY: “Last month, the Trump family business received approval from a local government in Scotland for a major expansion of its golf resort near Aberdeen, marking the largest real estate development financed by the Trump Organization since the 2016 election. In August, President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Jr., flew to Jakarta to help kick-start sales at a pair of Trump-branded luxury resorts planned for Indonesia. He appeared at a private event with wealthy prospective buyers and joined his politically connected billionaire Indonesian business partner at a news conference. And last year, Donald Jr. visited India to sell condos at future Trump-branded towers, appearing at an event that also featured India’s prime minister. But for the children of the politically powerful, personal business and public dealings can often be indistinguishable, especially when private projects depend on foreign governments that are looking to bolster ties with Washington.”

FRANCE/G7/GOLF/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP BUSINESS: “Presidents usually use international summits to advance their policy agenda on the world stage. But President Trump turned a public appearance in southern France on Monday [8-26-19] into what sounded like an infomercial for his sagging golf and resort business in southern Florida. In suggesting that the next Group of 7 summit of world leaders should be at his own luxury golf resort in Doral, Fla., west of Miami, Mr. Trump put the most glaring spotlight to date on his willingness to flout the ethical boundaries that have historically constrained activities that mix for-profit business and the presidency. And not just for any personal business: The Trump National Doral Miami Golf Club is the Trump family’s biggest moneymaking asset, which has shown signs of financial struggle since Mr. Trump began running for president in 2015. Mr. Trump said his property, a ‘great place,’ was uniquely equipped to handle the Group of 7 meeting in 2020.”

GOLF/SCOTLAND/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The sand dunes on the Trump International golf course in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, are expected to lose their protected conservation designation, the government said Friday [6-28-19]. Scottish Natural Heritage said that about a third of the dunes on the Menie Estate have been damaged in the development of the course. The remainder of the habitats in the area have been ‘significantly fragmented, and ecological processes disrupted,’ the agency said. The dune habitat covers about 154 hectares, or about 0.6 square miles. Development has damaged about 15% of the area, and the conservation group is removing the area from the Foveran Links Site of Special Scientific Interest, pending a three-month consultation…The site is a ‘very high quality example’ of a sand dune system typical of northeast Scotland, the agency said, important for the wide variety of coastal landforms and processes in the region.”

GOLF/IRELAND/TRUMP FAMILY: “When Eric and Donald Trump, Jr. arrived in the one corner of Ireland celebrating their father’s first visit as U.S. president, they had one question for the locals: ‘Does Doonbeg love Trump?’ Unlike the protests that greeted Trump in London this week, there were no inflatable blimps depicting him as a baby or large statues of him sitting on a golden lavatory, trousers around his ankles, when the president visited the tiny Irish village. Instead Doonbeg’s residents decked the streets in American flags and stars and stripes bunting, crediting Trump with securing their livelihoods when in 2014 he bought the nearby golf resort where he will spend the next two nights. Amid a celebratory street party of Irish dancing, Trump’s two sons went from pub to pub posing for selfies with kids, shaking hands and buying drinks for all the patrons.”

GOLF/IRELAND/TRUMP BUSINESS: “Donald Trump is on a global tour of his own businesses — and it’s putting more money in his bank account. On Wednesday [6-5-19], the president traveled to his luxury resort on Ireland’s west coast for a visit that will bring world-wide publicity and increased security to the location, and, if past trends hold, more revenue. Revenue increased in 2018 at many of the Trump developments that he visited that year, according to Trump’s most recent personal financial disclosure forms. There’s Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., where he dines on steak dinners; Trump National Golf Club in Virginia, where he spends his weekends; and Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey, where he vacations over the summer. And revenue increased by $3.1 million at Trump Turnberry, the resort on the Scottish coast he visited in July 2018, according to the documents. It’s difficult to know the exact reason for the boost — and increased revenue doesn’t always equal an overall profit — but some see a link between Trump’s presence and revenue.”

GOLF/RUSSIA INVESTIGATION/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP PEOPLE: “The Latest on special counsel Robert Mueller’s report and President Donald Trump (all times local): 3 p.m. The White House says President Donald Trump played golf Friday [4-19-19] with conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh and a couple of unidentified friends. Trump is spending the Easter weekend at his private Mar-a-Lago club along with the first lady. The foursome played at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The trip comes one day after a redacted special counsel report found no Trump campaign collusion with Russia around the 2016 election, but issued no clear verdict on obstruction, while detailing several instances of Trump seeking to squash the investigation. Prior to golfing, Trump lashed out through tweets at people who cooperated with Robert Mueller’s team. He said statements in the report made by some were ‘fabricated & totally untrue.’”

CELEBS/GOLF/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Donald Trump announced Monday [4-15-19] that he will award Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom after his win Sunday at the Masters, the golfer’s first major championship win since 2008…The Presidential Medal of Freedom is one of the nation’s highest civilian awards and is bestowed upon those who have made ‘especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.’ Woods, considered one of the greatest golf players of all time, had earlier won the Masters in 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2005. His most recent victory in one of golf’s four major championships was the 2008 U.S. Open. He has 15 major championship wins in his career, second all time behind Jack Nicklaus, who has 18. Trump is an avid fan of golf, a sport he is known to play regularly, including on frequent trips to the multiple golf properties he owns. The Trump Organization maintains 19 golf properties, including well-known courses at Turnberry, Scotland; West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Trump National Doral in Miami.”

GOLF/MEDIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “For Donald Trump, the rigid rules of golf are flexible, allowing for the kick of a wayward ball into a better location, skipping a putt that looks close enough. What’s the big deal? That is according to Rick Reilly, a former Sports Illustrated columnist who has just written the book ‘Commander in Cheat,’ which alleges Trump is guilty of all sorts of sins on the golf course. In an interview with Reuters on Thursday [4-4-19], Reilly laid out a number of accusations to support his view that the U.S. president’s golf game is, well, not par for the course, particularly for a president who owns a string of golf resorts. Among the charges: Playing with pros Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson and Brad Faxon in November 2017, Trump hit two balls in the water on one hole but didn’t charge himself any penalty strokes.”

GOLF/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/UK: “President Trump has implied that a golf course owned by the Trump Organization in Scotland helps cement the United States’ relationship with Britain, just a few days after a Scottish court ruled that the company had to pay expenses in a failed lawsuit. The Trump International golf course near Aberdeen, in northeastern Scotland, was ordered on Wednesday to cover the Scottish government’s legal costs after the company was unsuccessful in its attempts to halt a North Sea wind power development. Mr. Trump’s company had argued that the wind turbines would mar the view from the golf course. The case went to the  Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in December 2015, where the company lost, setting up the ruling about who should pay costs.”
