ETHICS/MILITARY/SCOTLAND/TRUMP BUSINESS: “The Air Force has concluded scores of overnight stays at President Donald Trump’s seaside resort in Scotland did not violate any rules but did raise questions about the ‘public perception’ of funneling taxpayer funds to a property owned by the commander in chief. The review, overseen by the Air Mobility Command, recommended aircrew commanders receive additional training to help them decide where to house personnel on overseas missions that include stopovers at civilian airfields such as Glasgow Prestwick Airport, about 40 minutes from Trump’s golf resort. That includes asking ‘are there any obvious concerns to be considered about public perception of where the crew is lodging?’ according to the review, ordered by the Air Force secretary and chief of staff after POLITICO first reported in August that Air Force crews are regularly staying at the plush resort.”

ETHICS/GOLF/SCOTLAND/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP BUSINESS/TRUMP FAMILY: “Last month, the Trump family business received approval from a local government in Scotland for a major expansion of its golf resort near Aberdeen, marking the largest real estate development financed by the Trump Organization since the 2016 election. In August, President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Jr., flew to Jakarta to help kick-start sales at a pair of Trump-branded luxury resorts planned for Indonesia. He appeared at a private event with wealthy prospective buyers and joined his politically connected billionaire Indonesian business partner at a news conference. And last year, Donald Jr. visited India to sell condos at future Trump-branded towers, appearing at an event that also featured India’s prime minister. But for the children of the politically powerful, personal business and public dealings can often be indistinguishable, especially when private projects depend on foreign governments that are looking to bolster ties with Washington.”

SCOTLAND/TRUMP BUSINESS: “Despite opposition from many local residents, the Trump Organization on Thursday [9-26-19] received approval in Scotland for what will be the largest new company-financed real estate development project since President Trump was elected: a major expansion of its golf resort near the northeast port city of Aberdeen. The plans call for the construction of 500 homes, 50 hotel cottages, and sports and retail complexes next to the Trump family’s Aberdeen golf club, which has struggled financially since the company purchased the property more than a decade ago. A second 18-hole golf course is also planned on the 1,500-acre site, north of Aberdeen. The first phase of this project is more modest: about 80 homes and five hotel lodges, documents show. But unlike most of the recent Trump projects, this is not simply a matter of selling the Trump name or hotel management services. The Trump Organization would be the real estate developer on the project, which could cost an estimated $180 million if it is entirely built out as approved this week.”

MILITARY/SCOTLAND/TRUMP BUSINESS: “Air Force officers who have earned medals for their tours of duty can pick up some more brass with a short pit stop in Southwest Scotland. As part of its relationship with the Air Force, the Trump Turnberry resort occasionally gifts high-ranking officers a version of its ‘Pride Pin,’ a lapel pin featuring the property’s iconic lighthouse — an honor reserved for VIPs — upon their arrival, according to a resort staffer familiar with the practice. Rank-and-file members can expect a more basic welcome package in their rooms, featuring goodies like Scottish shortbread. A five-day visit to Turnberry and the surrounding region revealed that the regular visits from Air Force crews on layovers from Prestwick Airport have become a major facet of the life of the resort. It also revealed that, rather than being restricted to single-night refueling stops, some visits last multiple nights, expanding the known dimensions of the relationship between the president’s luxury resort and the U.S. military.”

DEMS/INVESTIGATIONS/MILITARY/SCOTLAND/TRUMP BUSINESS: “The U.S. Air Force has lodged crews at President Donald Trump’s Scotland resort up to 40 times since 2015, a figure that is far higher than previously known. The tally represents the preliminary results of an Air Force review launched after POLITICO reported last week that an Air National Guard crew stayed at Turnberry in March. Congressional Democrats have also been investigating military stays at the property, but have yet to receive any information from the Pentagon. The figure does not indicate how many of the stays have occurred since Trump became president. But the Air Force has significantly ramped up its overnight stops in Scotland under Trump after signing a contract with the Prestwick Airport — situated 20-plus miles from Turnberry — in the waning months of the Obama administration. Since 2015, the service has lodged crews in the area 659 times, meaning up to 6 percent of those stays were at Turnberry.”

MILITARY/SCOTLAND/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP BUSINESS/TRUMP PEOPLE: “House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday [9-10-19] defended military expenditures at President Donald Trump’s properties, arguing that hotels owned by the president are “just like any other hotel’…McCarthy’s defense comes as the Air Force has launched a global review of its layover policy following a POLITICO report that crews have made multiple stays at Trump’s luxury seaside Turnberry golf resort in Scotland, an unusual stop for crews heading to and from the Middle East. On Friday [9-6-19], POLITICO revealed that the House Oversight Committee began looking into the peculiar uptick in fueling stops at a small commercial airport servicing the hotel this April after an Air Force crew stayed overnight at Trump’s resort weeks earlier.”

MILITARY/SCOTLAND/TRUMP BUSINESS: “I know nothing about an Air Force plane landing at an airport (which I do not own and have nothing to do with) near Turnberry Resort (which I do own) in Scotland, and filling up with fuel, with the crew staying overnight at Turnberry (they have good taste!). NOTHING TO DO WITH ME”

MILITARY/SCOTLAND/TRUMP BUSINESS: “Back in 2014, soon after acquiring a golf resort in Scotland, Donald J. Trump entered a partnership with a struggling local airport there to increase air traffic and boost tourism in the region. The next year, as Mr. Trump began running for president, the Pentagon decided to ramp up its use of that same airport to refuel Air Force flights and gave the local airport authority the job of helping to find accommodations for flight crews who had to remain overnight. Those two separate arrangements have now intersected in ways that provide the latest evidence of how Mr. Trump’s continued ownership of his business produces regular ethical questions. On Monday [9-9-19], President Trump sought to tamp down a growing controversy over a stay at the resort by United States military personnel who were traveling through the airport in Scotland in March. First on Twitter and later speaking to reporters at the White House, he said he was not involved in any decision to put an Air Force flight crew at the resort, known as Trump Turnberry.”

HOUSE OF REPS/MILITARY/SCOTLAND/TRUMP BUSINESS: “In early Spring of this year, an Air National Guard crew made a routine trip from the U.S. to Kuwait to deliver supplies. What wasn’t routine was where the crew stopped along the way: President Donald Trump’s Turnberry resort, about 50 miles outside Glasgow, Scotland. Since April, the House Oversight Committee has been investigating why the crew on the C-17 military transport plane made the unusual stay — both en route to the Middle East and on the way back — at the luxury waterside resort, according to several people familiar with the incident. But they have yet to receive any answers from the Pentagon. The inquiry is part of a broader, previously unreported probe into U.S. military expenditures at and around the Trump property in Scotland.”

GOLF/SCOTLAND/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The sand dunes on the Trump International golf course in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, are expected to lose their protected conservation designation, the government said Friday [6-28-19]. Scottish Natural Heritage said that about a third of the dunes on the Menie Estate have been damaged in the development of the course. The remainder of the habitats in the area have been ‘significantly fragmented, and ecological processes disrupted,’ the agency said. The dune habitat covers about 154 hectares, or about 0.6 square miles. Development has damaged about 15% of the area, and the conservation group is removing the area from the Foveran Links Site of Special Scientific Interest, pending a three-month consultation…The site is a ‘very high quality example’ of a sand dune system typical of northeast Scotland, the agency said, important for the wide variety of coastal landforms and processes in the region.”

GOLF/SCOTLAND/TRUMP BUSINESS: “The Turnberry golf resort owned by US president Donald Trump has racked up millions of pounds of losses for the fourth year in a row. According to Companies House filings, SLC Turnberry’s parent company Golf Recreation Scotland was in the red by almost £3.4m in 2017. In the previous year, it posted losses of £17.6m after the resort was closed for six months for redevelopment. Since Mr Trump took over Turnberry in 2014, its losses have totalled £33m. Mr Trump stepped down as a director in January last year after becoming US president, handing control of his business empire to his sons. In the latest set of accounts, his son Eric – who remains as a director – said: ‘Having seen a decline in turnover of 22% in 2016 due to the resort only being open for six months, 2017 saw an increase in revenue year over year of 70%.'”
