BORDER/ENVIRONMENT/IMMIGRATION/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/WALL: “It may come as a surprise that the nation’s oldest grassroots environmental group is at the forefront of the border wall debate. But a Sierra Club lawsuit is temporarily blocking President Donald Trump’s plan to reallocate government funds to build the barrier on federal protected land. The 127-year-old group says it sees the immigration fight as part of its environmental mission. That wasn’t always the case. As early as the 1960s, the organization was calling on countries to limit population growth. And in 1978, its board called on Congress to examine U.S. immigration laws, including the impact of immigration on U.S. population growth. But the 1990s, facing backlash from immigration advocacy groups, the Sierra Club officially adopted a neutral stance on immigration even as internal battles on the issue continued. The group officially embraced immigration as a cause in 2013, and in 2017, the club pledged support for federal policy allowing undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children to remain in the country.”
