BUDGET/FEDERAL FUNDING/MEDICAID/NATURAL DISASTERS/PUERTO RICO/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Donald Trump intervened to cut the federal government’s Medicaid funding for Puerto Rico as part of a larger government spending deal, according to four sources with knowledge of the discussions. The budget deal unveiled by lawmakers this week allocates up to $5.7 billion in Medicaid funds for the island over two years — instead of $12 billion over four years that Republican and Democratic leaders on two key congressional committees had endorsed after months of negotiating a long-term financial path for Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico has frequently been in Trump’s crosshairs, with the president calling the island ‘one of the most corrupt places on Earth’ and its politicians ‘either incompetent or corrupt.’ Puerto Rico officials have also frequently been critical of the president, especially in the wake of the federal government’s response to the catastrophic Hurricane Maria in 2017.”

Also, open up the ridiculously closed water lanes coming down from the North. Don’t pour it out into the Pacific Ocean. Should be done immediately. INVESTIGATIONS/NATURAL DISASTERS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “On Friday [9-13-19] morning in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., government scientists in khakis and sensible shoes bustled to work — beneath a towering bronze sculpture of a hand releasing seabirds — heading for a small scientific agency caught up in a political mess triggered by President Trump’s tweet about Hurricane Dorian. One of the arriving employees was Neil Jacobs, the head of the agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. ‘We’re under investigation,’ a weary looking Dr. Jacobs said, a large messenger bag slung over his shoulder. ‘I can’t talk.’ The investigations are examining an attack on the independence of an agency that, despite its enormous importance to the United States economy, typically flies well below the radar. That changed in recent weeks when meteorologists working for NOAA corrected Mr. Trump on Twitter after he inaccurately described Hurricane Dorian’s path. The president then ordered the agency to support his version of events, triggering a political clash.”

NATURAL DISASTERS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/WILBER ROSS: “President Trump, seeking to justify his claim of a hurricane threat to Alabama, pressed aides to intervene with a federal scientific agency, leading to a highly unusual public rebuke of the forecasters who contradicted him, according to people familiar with the events. In response to the president’s request, Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, told Wilbur Ross, the commerce secretary, to have the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration publicly correct the forecasters, who had insisted that Alabama was not actually at risk from Hurricane Dorian. A senior administration official, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters, said Mr. Trump told his staff to have NOAA ‘clarify’ the forecasters’ position. NOAA, which is part of the Commerce Department, then issued an unsigned statement saying the Birmingham, Ala., office of the National Weather Service was wrong to refute the president’s warning so categorically. But the statement only intensified the uproar over Mr. Trump’s storm prediction as critics accused his administration of politicizing the weather.”

NATURAL DISASTERS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Donald Trump isn’t letting it go. The president on Friday [9-6-19] continued to defend his misleading prognostication for the path of Hurricane Dorian, assailing the news media and in the process, digging in and reviving the controversy for a sixth day…Despite Trump’s assertion that he’d originally suggested Alabama could be ‘grazed or hit,’ the nearly weeklong controversy originated in a Sunday [9-1-19] tweet that declared Alabama was among a handful of Southeastern states that ‘will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated.’ The National Weather Service almost immediately debunked the president’s claim, but he repeated the assertion twice more that day, and one day later he lashed out at an ABC News correspondent who’d fact-checked him on the issue. The fiasco compounded Wednesday [9-4-19] when Trump showed reporters a days-old map forecasting Dorian’s path that had been doctored to include Alabama in the storm’s path.”

BOYCOTTS/NATURAL DISASTERS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The pen has never been mightier. President Donald Trump’s Sharpie pen, that is. Mr. Trump’s suspected use of a signature black Sharpie to alter a hurricane map has prompted thousands of mocking tweets, late-night comedy jokes and a viral internet meme. It has also further fused a staple of American homes and offices with the image of a highly divisive president, showing that even a humdrum marker maker can be swept up in the constant furor surrounding the Trump White House. Mr. Trump is a longtime user of the Sharpie pen, whose thick, bold imprint is a visual reflection of Mr. Trump’s blunt — some might say crude — style. Well before he was president, he regularly used the pens to sign autographs, write notes and mark up printed news articles before sending them back to their authors. As president, Mr. Trump appears more enamored of the pens than ever, using them to sign his name to proclamations and legislation in his distinctive EKG-style signature.”

FLORIDA/IMMIGRATION/NATURAL DISASTERS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP PEOPLE: “Florida Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott asked President Donald Trump on Wednesday [9-4-19] to waive some visa requirements for citizens of the Bahamas, which was devastated by Hurricane Dorian. In a letter to Trump, Rubio and Scott requested that the administration make it easier for citizens of the Bahamas to seek shelter with their families in the United States, in the aftermath of the Category 5 hurricane that left at least seven dead and devastated much of the island nation…Both senators also noted Florida’s strong ties to the Bahamas and said Floridians ‘are eager to help their family and friends in the Bahamas.’ About 20,000 Bahamians reportedly live in South Florida. Hubert Minnis, prime minister of the Bahamas, said Tuesday [9-3-19] that the country was ‘in the midst of one of the great national crises in our country’s history.’”
