BORDER/CHILDREN/IMMIGRATION/JEFF SESSION/TRUMP PEOPLE: “Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended the Trump administration’s separation of children from their parents who cross into the U.S. illegally and suggested the policy could be ended as part of broader immigration legislation that may be voted on this week. Mr. Sessions in May announced a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy of detaining adults attempting to cross into the U.S. at the southern border, which has resulted in the division of families traveling with children, as part of a broader effort to deter adults pursuing asylum from violence in Central America. On Monday [6-18-18] at a sheriffs’ conference, Mr. Sessions suggested ways that the policy could be ended. ‘If we build the wall, if we pass some legislation, we close some loopholes, we won’t face these terrible choices,’ he said. He added that the policy was intended to ‘end the lawlessness’ at the southern border. The president is set to meet with lawmakers on Monday and Tuesday [6-19-18] ahead of a pair of House immigration votes tentatively scheduled for this week that include potential funding for border security as well as addressing the fate of young undocumented immigrants dubbed ‘Dreamers.'”
