AFRICAN AMERICANS/CIVIL RIGHTS/JOE BIDEN: “I wouldn’t be here without the African-American community… I was a kid getting engaged in the Civil Rights movement. When I came back from law school, we didn’t have a law school in Delaware at the time. I went to Syracuse law school, came back. That semester, Dr. King had been assassinated, 20% of my city was burned to the ground. I had a good job with a well-known law firm and I quit and became a public defender because we’re the only city in American history since the Civil War occupied by the military for 10 months with drawn bayonets.”
