CALIFORNIA/CENSUS/CITIZENSHIP/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “California officials claimed a legal victory Thursday [6-27-19] after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, a query that Gov. Gavin Newsom and others fear would undercount residents, endanger federal aid and cost crucial seats in Congress. He joined Newsom, Secretary of State Alex Padilla, Speaker Anthony Rendon and state Sen. Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana) — all clearly relieved by the decision — in emphasizing what they said would be California’s historic $187 million effort to ensure that every resident is counted in the 2020 census while also cautioning that the state’s fight for an accurate census count is far from over. The court’s 5-4 decision was viewed as a major defeat for the Trump Administration — and a victory for immigrants’ rights groups and for California — especially because Chief Justice John Roberts surprisingly aligned with the court’s four left-leaning justices.”
