IMMIGRATION/MEXICO/TARIFFS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Donald Trump on Friday [6-7-19] dropped his unpopular plan to impose tariffs on hundreds of billion of dollars of goods from Mexico after the two countries reach a deal to stem the flow of Central American migrants entering the United States. Trump said that Mexico had agreed to take ‘strong measures’ to address migration flows…Mexico said it would send 6,000 troops from its newly formed National Guard to the country’s southern border with Guatemala, a move aimed at cutting off the flow of migrants bound for the U.S. border. Mexican officials emphasized that the agreement doesn’t require having Mexico declared a ‘safe third country,’ as the Trump administration had sought. Under such an agreement, Central American migrants would be required to seek asylum in Mexico if they pass through that country en route to the U.S.”
