IMMIGRATION/JARED KUSHNER/SENATE/TRUMP PEOPLE: “Jared Kushner briefed senators Tuesday [5-7-19] on an immigration proposal meant to boost border security and set up a new merit-based system that would keep the number of legal immigrants coming into the U.S. at current levels, according to administration officials and lawmakers…The meeting comes as the Trump administration argues that a surge of Central American migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border has stretched resources to the limit and necessitated changes to federal immigration laws. The White House urged lawmakers last week to provide $4.5 billion in additional funds to address the influx this year, a sum that in part would boost shelter beds for unaccompanied minors and adult detention. A legislative proposal piloted by Kushner could give the White House the opportunity to better outline President Donald Trump’s immigration stance in the run-up to the 2020 election, but comes with risks, too. Any Trump plan stands little chance of winning over skeptical Democrats and could even risk alienating hard-line allies who want lower levels of legal immigration.”
