CONGRESS/POLLS/TRUMP TAXES: “There’s no groundswell among voters for Congress to force President Donald Trump to release his tax returns, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll. Half of those surveyed said it should be a priority for Congress, while 40 percent said it wasn’t very important or shouldn’t be done at all. The rest said they didn’t know or offered no opinion. Predictably, the issue broke sharply along party lines, with 77 percent of Democrats saying it should be a priority, but only 19 percent of Republicans agreeing. Among independents, 49 percent considered it a priority. Trump ignored decades of tradition by refusing to release his returns before the 2016 election. House Democrats say they are preparing to order the Treasury Department to turn Trump’s tax returns over to the Ways and Means Committee, which could also try to make them public. Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) is under pressure from liberals to act quickly, but Neal appears to be holding to his strategy of taking a measured approach.”
