DEMS/HOUSE OF REPS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT/TRUMP TAXES: “House Democratic leaders aren’t in a rush to demand President Donald Trump’s tax returns, despite pressure from more progressive members of the caucus…Trump himself escalated the debate over the Democrats’ efforts in his State of the Union address, just ahead of a Thursday hearing at a Ways and Means subcommittee on the matter, by asserting that ‘ridiculous partisan investigations’ could upend what he called the ‘economic miracle’ happening in the U.S. At the same time, House progressives have pressed Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) to move as quickly as possible to acquire Trump’s tax returns, even as Neal himself stresses that he wants the process to be methodical. House Democratic leaders, in addition to backing Neal’s approach, also say they won’t be bullied by Trump. House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that the party takes its checks-and-balances powers seriously, but added ‘we’re not going to overreach, we’re not going to over-investigate, we’re not going to over-politicize our constitutional responsibilities.’”
