BORDER/IMMIGRATION/MEXICO/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The U.S. and Mexico forged a tentative agreement to keep asylum seekers in Mexico while their applications are pending, yours truly reported over the weekend — a departure from current U.S. procedure, which allows those seeking asylum to remain in the U.S. until their case is reviewed by an immigration judge. The agreement, which has yet to be announced, was the result of two months of secret talks between the Trump administration and incoming Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s government…Negotiations over the asylum deal have been complicated by Mexico’s presidential transition, the official said, and probably won‘t be announced until after López Obrador is sworn in Dec. 1. Representatives of the coming administration, while deeply involved, have been operating in a diplomatic gray area while current president, Enrique Peña Nieto, is in power…The president threatened over the holiday weekend to close the border if he’s not satisfied with Mexico’s security efforts.
