DEMS/ELECTION/HOUSE OF REPS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “If Democrats retake the House next month, they may take a couple of opportunities to work with President Donald Trump on legislation. But don’t expect any big economic deals. In the latest POLITICO Money podcast, reporters Elana Schor and Megan Cassella discuss their recent work with Sarah Karlin-Smith and Aaron Lorenzo on how Democrats may operate if Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) becomes House speaker again. There could be windows for deals on criminal justice reform and possibly lowering drug prices. But Democrats are not likely to hand Trump any big wins on infrastructure or taxes as the party looks ahead to the 2020 presidential campaign. On the trade front, Democrats could look to make small changes to the redesigned trade deal the White House negotiated with Mexico and Canada. But they are unlikely to kill the deal for fear of being blamed for any economic fallout. Those looking for stronger pushback on Trump’s trade battles with China and the European Union are also likely to be disappointed.”
