BORDER/IMMIGRATION/JEFF SESSIONS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Families who cross into the U.S. illegally aren’t being prosecuted for now, said the official who oversees agents at the border, effectively circumventing the Trump administration’s policy of zero tolerance for illegal immigration. That said, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said the zero-tolerance policy remained in effect. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the same thing Monday [6-25-18]. President Donald Trump on Monday called again for replacing what he termed the nation’s ‘obsolete’ and ‘horrible’ immigration laws, and Republican leaders in the House of Representatives sought to rally support for an overhaul bill expected for a vote this week. Speaking in an Oval Office meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan, Mr. Trump said, ‘We have to change our laws. We have to make them sensible.’ He also called for ‘strong borders.’ Mr. Trump said he was ‘very, very happy’ that he signed an executive order last week under which the U.S. will seek to detain migrant families together while their asylum claims are adjudicated. Following the administration’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy of prosecuting illegal adult entrants, more than 2,300 children were detained separately from adults with whom they crossed the border, prompting a broad outcry.”
