BUSINESS/CHINA/SANCTIONS/TECHNOLOGY/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The White House on Monday [5-14-18] said President Donald Trump asked his commerce secretary to look into lifting or easing sanctions against a Chinese telecommunications company as part of a ‘give and take’ with China…In a surprising overture to China, Trump tweeted Sunday [5-13-18] that he would help ZTE Corp., a major supplier of telecom networks and smartphones based in southern China, get ‘back into business,’ saying too many jobs in China were at stake after the U.S. government cut off access to its American suppliers.The U.S. Commerce Department last month blocked ZTE from importing American components for seven years. The U.S. accused ZTE of misleading American regulators after it settled charges of violating sanctions against North Korea and Iran. Trump tweeted Monday that ZTE ‘buys a big percentage of individual parts from U.S. companies.'”
