2016 ELECTION/LEGAL/PAUL MANAFORT/ROBERT MUELLER/RUSSIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign manager indicted on tax and lobbying charges, lost his bid Friday [4-27-18] to restrict special counsel Robert Mueller through a civil lawsuit. The order dismissed a civil case Mr. Manafort had brought alleging that the Justice Department had exceeded its authority in establishing Mr. Mueller’s mandate last May. Mr. Manafort had also alleged that Mr. Mueller had overstepped his bounds in charging Mr. Manafort with crimes unrelated to Russian meddling the 2016 election, which is the core focus of Mr. Mueller’s efforts. Mr. Manafort made similar arguments in separate filings in the two criminal cases prosecutors have lodged against him, and both courts have yet to rule on those filings. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Judge Jackson said that because Mr. Manafort had the ability to challenge the prosecution and raise any issues in the criminal proceedings, she needed to dismiss the complaint in the civil case.”
