2016 ELECTION/ROBERT MUELLER/RUSSIA/TRUMP PEOPLE: “A lawyer who pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators probing alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election was sentenced Tuesday [4-4-18] to 30 days in prison and a $20,000 fine. Alex van der Zwaan admitted in February he had misled investigators about his last contact with former Trump campaign aide Richard Gates and others. He said he had done so to protect his job as a lawyer at the firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, but was fired from the firm. Mr. van der Zwaan had asked for probation. His sentence is the first in special counsel Robert Mueller’s wide-ranging investigation…Mr. van der Zwaan told investigators his last contact with Mr. Gates had been in mid-August, when in fact he had discussed the Ukraine work with Mr. Gates in September, including through an encrypted app, special counsel prosecutor Andrew Weissmann said in a federal courtroom in Washington. Mr. van der Zwaan also admitted he deleted emails sought by investigators.”
