DREAMERS/IMMIGRATION/LEGAL/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “A federal judge in San Francisco blocked the Trump administration’s effort to end an Obama-era program that protected hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation.
U.S. District Judge William Alsup temporarily blocked the ending of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program late Tuesday in a 49-page ruling.
Mr. Alsup considered multiple lawsuits challenging President Donald Trump’s decision to end the program, which has protected as many as 800,000 young immigrants, known as Dreamers.
In the ruling, Mr. Alsup said that until the cases are completed, the administration must consider renewal applications from immigrants who were enrolled in the program when Mr. Trump announced its ending Sept. 5. But a provision allowing immigrants to ask for permission to leave the U.S. and return doesn’t have to continue, he said, and the administration won’t be required to consider new, first-time applications… Janet Napolitano, who led the Department of Homeland Security when DACA was created, is now the head of the University of California, which also sued… A different federal judge in San Francisco in November issued a permanent, nationwide injunction barring the administration from withholding some federal grant money from so-called sanctuary cites, which don’t cooperate with immigration authorities.”
