GOP/HOUSE OF REPS/LEGAL: “The House of Representatives acted Wednesday [11-29-17] to improve awareness of the rules against sexual harassment, passing a bipartisan measure that would mandate new workplace training for the chamber’s lawmakers and staff…
The measure requires House members and employees, including interns, fellows and other short-term staff, to complete a program that includes anti-harassment and anti-discrimination training. It doesn’t apply to U.S. senators or their staff.
Congress has been under renewed scrutiny over the way it handles sexual-harassment complaints after two prominent Democrats were accused of inappropriate behavior. Another Republican Senate candidate has been accused of misconduct involving teenage girls.
The resolution passed the Republican-controlled House on a voice vote, a procedure used for uncontroversial legislation. The measure drew the support of Republican and Democratic leadership as an important first step to ensuring that Congress remains a harassment-free work environment for the thousands of members, staffers and interns that work for the legislature…
The House Administration Committee will hold a hearing next month to examine potential revisions to the law that governs congressional human-resources complaints.”
