ELECTION/GOP/NOMINATIONS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld said on Friday [2-15-19] that he is exploring a challenge to President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination in 2020…Weld’s most recent political bid was a 2016 run for vice president on the Libertarian ticket alongside former presidential candidate and New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson. By jumping in as the first Republican to possibly challenge Trump’s reelection, Weld is likely to draw attention. The former governor currently works at ML Strategies, and took a leave from the Boston-based consulting firm in 2016 to campaign. At the Libertarian Party’s 2016 convention, Weld said he was a ‘Libertarian for life.’ He continued courting Libertarian groups after November, but appears to have done an about-face for 2020. Leading up to Friday’s announcement, there was some speculation as to whether Weld would run as a Republican or a Libertarian. Just a week ago, Weld registered as a Republican, CommonWealth Magazine first reported.”
