HUD/NEW YORK/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Faced with years of managerial failures and deteriorating living conditions in the country’s largest public housing system, the Trump administration has imposed more control on the New York City Housing Authority. A federal monitor will have oversight of NYCHA, which runs 2,417 buildings that are home to some 400,000 New Yorkers. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan will pick the monitor in the coming weeks, with input from the city. Mayor Bill de Blasio and his successors will be on the hook to spend at least $2.2 billion over 10 years as part of the agreement. Meanwhile, the city will replace its current interim chair, Stanley Brezenoff, with someone from a list of candidates approved by the federal government. HUD Secretary Ben Carson announced the agreement with de Blasio in his Lower Manhattan headquarters Thursday [1-31-19] afternoon, seven months after federal prosecutors accused the housing authority of putting residents’ lives in danger through deceit, mismanagement and neglect.”
