HUD/NEW YORK/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The Trump administration is announcing it will implement greater oversight at the troubled New York City Housing Authority Thursday, following a federal complaint about dangerous conditions in the housing complexes last year. A source familiar with the negotiations told POLITICO that federal Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson is expected to name an outside monitor Thursday afternoon. That person will oversee operations at the housing authority, which houses some 400,000 New Yorkers. An agreement between New York City officials and HUD will put in place goals and deadlines to correct extensive maintenance issues such as broken boilers, faulty elevators and persistent mold. The agency has been plagued by years of problems, which came to a head during a multiyear federal investigation over lapsed lead paint inspections. The city is going to have to spend billions of dollars, in excess of the original plan to spend $1.2 billion over five years, the source said. That arrangement, which NYCHA reached with HUD last year, was rejected by a federal judge and Thursday [1-31-19] is the deadline for a new agreement.”
