DEMS/GOP/TAXES/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The dust has barely settled on the midterm elections, yet tax talk is already in the air thanks to President Donald Trump signaling openness to higher taxes, at least for some. Riffing at a post-election press conference at the White House, Trump said he’d be open to making an ‘adjustment’ to recent corporate and upper-income tax cuts to draw Democrats to his proposal for further middle-class tax cuts. Asked if he’d be willing to raise rates on corporations and wealthy individuals to get another middle-class tax cut, Trump replied: ‘It could be.’ Those off-the-cuff comments are sure to spark concerns among Republican leaders who pushed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, H.R. 1 (115), through Congress last year without Democratic support, as well as businesses that fought hard for the tax cuts, reports our Toby Eckert and yours truly. “[A]s an example, if the Democrats come up with an idea for tax cuts, which I am a big believer in tax cuts, I would absolutely pursue something even if it means some adjustment,” Trump said. He caught members of his own administration and Republican lawmakers by surprise last month when he said the GOP was working on a 10 percent tax cut for the middle class. During Wednesday’s [11-7-18] press conference, Trump also suggested he could find common ground with Democrats on health care and infrastructure.”
