NORTH KOREA/NUCLEAR/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Trump received a new letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the White House said, in the latest public display of diplomacy between the two countries. The content of the letter wasn’t disclosed, but White House press secretary Sarah Sanders on Thursday [8-2-18] described the correspondence as the next step in an effort to reach an agreement over the North’s nuclear arsenal. She said the letter was received on Wednesday [8-1-18]…Mr. Trump wrote a response to Mr. Kim on Thursday, Ms. Sanders said, describing the president’s letter as consistent with their discussion at the Singapore summit. Mr. Trump has spoken publicly about meeting again with Mr. Kim, and invited the North Korean leader to Washington. Ms. Sanders on Thursday said no follow-up meeting between the two leaders has been scheduled, but the White House is ‘certainly open to that discussion’…Mr. Trump has aimed to restore diplomatic links between the two nations, and in June became the first sitting U.S. president to meet with a North Korean leader.”
