G7/NORTH KOREA/POLL/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “After the G-7 summit ended with Mr. Trump feuding with the Canadian prime minister, an American ally, the president now prepares for a high-stakes summit with one of America’s top adversaries, Mr. Kim. Fresh WSJ/NBC News polling indicates Americans are split on whether the outcome of the Trump-Kim meeting will be positive or negative. In the survey, 36% said they expected a negative outcome, whereas 31% expected a positive outcome. A large chunk — 31% — said they didn’t know enough to decide. But, as with most aspects of the Trump presidency, the poll suggests people feel differently depending on their political party. A majority of Republicans, 59%, expect a positive outcome; meanwhile, a majority of Democrats, 51%, foresee a negative outcome. About one-quarter of voters said they thought that Mr. Trump would wind up demanding too much of Mr. Kim, and so there would be no agreement. Those voters appear to agree with analysts who have said that Mr. Trump enters the negotiations with unrealistic expectations that North Korea will follow through on indications that it will give up its nuclear weapons program. Another 10% of voters in the survey said they believed that Mr. Trump would give up too much in order to forge an agreement with North Korea. That view mirrors those of analysts who, citing talk of a Nobel Prize for the president, believe that he will give away too much in order to secure a legacy as a statesman.”
