ELECTION/POLLS/TARIFFS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “…America’s allies, who have been sharply critical of the Trump administration’s threats of punitive tariffs on their economies, may find solace in fresh WSJ/NBC News polling that shows U.S. voters are wary about the idea of slapping tariffs on trading partners. We did not poll on trade extensively in June, but our pollsters asked participants one question on the topic–about their comfort level in voting for a congressional candidate who supports imposing tariffs on goods from trading partners including Canada, Germany and China. The response: 51% had reservations or were very uncomfortable voting for such a candidate. Another 27% were enthusiastic or comfortable with that stance, and the remaining 22% were not sure or said this stance made no difference to them. Tensions stemming from Mr. Trump’s trade actions are mounting ahead of this weekend’s meeting of the Group of Seven industrialized nations. It’s not the first time global allies have used the summit to confront Mr. Trump over his policies. Ahead of last year’s summit, European Council President Donald Tusk said it would be ‘the most challenging G-7 summit in years,’ as the other leaders planned to challenge the American position on climate change, trade and Russia.”
