MIKE POMPEO/NORTH KOREA/SOUTH KOREA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “President Donald Trump said Thursday [5-31-18] he expects North Korean officials to travel from New York to Washington on Friday to deliver a ‘very positive’ letter to him from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Mr. Trump said he was hopeful that his meeting with Mr. Kim could still take place on June 12 in Singapore, and that he may need a second or third meeting with Mr. Kim to reach a final agreement. He said resumed talks have gone very well. ‘I look forward to seeing what’s in the letter, but it’s very important to them,’ he said. He spoke to reporters in Washington before boarding Air Force One on his way to Texas. The comments came as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo opened a second day of talks with Gen. Kim Yong Chol, who is often described as the right-hand man to Kim Jong Un. Gen. Kim is the highest-ranking North Korean official to visit the U.S. in 18 years…There had been speculation in the South Korean media that Gen. Kim would be carrying a letter for Mr. Trump to respond to the one the president sent to the North Korean leader last week. A reply and a visit to Washington to deliver it would indicate that planning for the summit is moving ahead.”
