GUNS/POLITICAL FIGURES/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The White House has invited lawmakers who represent the sites of two of the deadliest school shootings in recent years to discuss gun violence and school safety with President Donald Trump on Wednesday [2-28-18].
The White House invite list includes Rep. Elizabeth Esty, a Connecticut Democrat whose district includes Sandy Hook Elementary, and Rep. Ted Deutch, a Florida Democrat whose district includes Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The White House has also reached out to Sens. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) and Chris Murphy (D., Conn.), according to two White House officials.
Messrs. Rubio and Murphy said they plan to attend. The other lawmakers couldn’t be immediately reached. A White House spokesman declined to comment on the guest list.
Mr. Trump’s outreach comes as he has said he would take action following the shooting deaths of 17 people at Stoneman Douglas on Feb. 14. The 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook killed 20 elementary school children and six adults.
The president has focused on the issue all week, even suggesting on Monday that had he been there at the time of the tragedy, he personally would have rushed into Stoneman Douglas to stop the shooting—even if he was unarmed.”
