FOREIGN POLICY/MILITARY/STATE/SUDAN/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The U.S. imposed an arms embargo on South Sudan Friday [2-3-18], in a sign of Washington’s mounting frustration with continued violence in the country.
The move is more symbolic than practical, as the U.S. government doesn’t sell arms or provide defense services to South Sudan, and there is virtually no military trade between the two countries.
However, the U.S. is also seeking to marshal support through the United Nations for an international arms embargo, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said…
Despite a continuing humanitarian disaster in the country, South Sudan’s leaders have continued to spend oil revenues on weapons procurement, according to a recent United Nations report. The U.N. said weapons have been flowing through borders with Sudan and Uganda.
In announcing the move on Friday, the State Department criticized the government and South Sudan’s opposition for continuing to use military force to seek political advantage in defiance of cease-fire agreements…
South Sudan spokesman Ateny Wek Aten said the government would meet with its ambassador to the U.S. to discuss its response.”
