FOREIGN POLICY/NORTH KOREA/UN: “The United Nations’ chief diplomat will travel to North Korea on Tuesday [12-5-17] for political talks, according to the U.N., in a rare, high-level visit by the world body.
Jeffrey Feltman, undersecretary general for political affairs, will be in Pyongyang for three days meeting senior regime officials on what the U.N. described as a wide ranging ‘policy dialogue’ at the invitation of North Korea.
Mr. Feltman is scheduled to meet North Korea’s foreign minister and vice president but not its leader, Kim Jong Un. Mr. Feltman also will meet diplomats and U.N. staff stationed in Pyongyang, officials said.
Six U.N. agencies with a staff of about 50 international employees are based in Pyongyang, offering mostly humanitarian relief services. The last time the U.N. dispatched its top diplomat to North Korea was 2010.”
