BERNIE SANDERS/POLITICAL FIGURES/TAXES: “Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders campaigned with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday [10-30-17], endorsing him as someone who would fight the agenda of President Donald Trump.
‘Everything that Mayor de Blasio is trying to do is exactly the opposite of what Donald Trump is trying to do. And you should be very proud of that,’ said Mr. Sanders, an independent who sought the Democratic presidential nomination last year.
A request to the White House for comment wasn’t immediately returned Monday night.
Earlier in the day, Messrs. Sanders and de Blasio rode a packed and delayed A-train together to the Fulton Street subway stop.
When they arrived downtown, Mr. Sanders voiced his support for the mayor’s proposed ‘millionaire’s tax’ to fund improvements to the city’s more than 100-year-old subway system. The tax, which would need approval from the state legislature, would provide a minimum half-billion dollars in annual revenue to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority…
Mr. de Blasio’s main opponent, Republican Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, said the tax proposal would be ‘dead on arrival’ in Albany, and wouldn’t provide the immediate revenue the subway system needs even if approved by state lawmakers.
‘We need that money now,’ she said Monday. Ms. Malliotakis said she would put some of the city’s surplus funds toward the subway plan laid out by Metropolitan Transportation Authority head Joseph Lhota.”
