CHRIS WRAY/FBI: “Chris Wray, the new director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said Sunday [10-22-17] that one of his top priorities would be to improve diversity in the bureau’s ranks…
More than 67% of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s 13,000 agents are white men and 16% are white women, according to statistics on the FBI website, while 4.4% are African-American and about 7% are Hispanic.
Mr. Wray said he was working with FBI officials and groups that represent minorities in law enforcement to figure out ways to improve those figures. ‘We are going to try harder,’ he said.
In his speech, Mr. Wray said that his ‘immediate priority has been to bring a sense of calm and stability to the bureau’–a nod to the dramatic way he found himself leading the agency. Mr. Wray said he would continue to push for more such networking as a way to confront the litany of challenges facing law enforcement that he said included terrorism, a nationwide increase in violent crime, an opioid crisis and the gulf of trust between some police agencies and the communities they serve. ‘We are in a uniquely difficult period for American law enforcement,’ Mr. Wray said.”
