SUPREME COURT/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The Trump administration on Thursday [10-5-17] urged the Supreme Court to dismiss a pending case on the president’s expiring travel ban, which it said was moot in light of new travel restrictions announced last month by President Donald Trump.
The justices already had removed the travel ban case from the court’s oral-argument calendar, but had asked parties on both sides to file legal briefs on whether the case should disappear entirely.
The justices over the summer had been preparing to review Mr. Trump’s March executive order that barred U.S. entry for travelers from six Muslim-majority countries. Two appeals courts had blocked implementation of the order, saying it was likely illegal, but the Supreme Court allowed the administration to enforce some travel restrictions in the interim.
On Sept. 24, Mr. Trump announced his third version of his travel ban, a more-targeted policy that focuses on nationals from eight countries, including non-Muslim nations North Korea and Venezuela. Provisions in the latest batch of travel restrictions range from a near-total ban on visitors from some countries to restrictions on a small number of visas in other cases.”
