DREAMERS/IMMIGRATION/POLITICS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Some 690,000 undocumented immigrants are currently enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and risk losing protections if Congress doesn’t act, the Department of Homeland Security said.
DACA provides two-year, renewable work permits and safe harbor from deportation to people brought to the U.S. as children.
DHS figures show that nearly 800,000 people have enrolled since DACA was created in 2012. That figure has been widely used in discussion of President Donald Trump’s decision, announced earlier this week, to end the program in six months.
Not all of those initial enrollees are still participating in the program. Nearly 40,000 of those enrollees have been approved for legal permanent residence, also known as green cards, said DHS spokesman David Lapan. Another 2,100 people have had their DACA status revoked or terminated. Others may have chosen not to reapply or seen renewal applications rejected for various reasons.
Of the 690,000 current participants, 154,000 will see their status expire before March 5 and are eligible to seek a two-year renewal if they apply by Oct. 5.”
