CHRIS WRAY/FBI/ROBERT MUELLER/RUSSIA: “FBI Director Chris Wray said Wednesday he had not detected ‘any whiff of interference’ by White House officials or any other individuals in the federal investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.
In his first public comments since taking the reins of the Federal Bureau of Investigation early last month, Mr. Wray also said he had confidence in Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his office to ‘do the job’ of investigating any Russian involvement in the election.
Mr. Wray was confirmed by the Senate on Aug. 1 to take over the FBI, the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, after President Donald Trump in May abruptly fired former FBI Director James Comey.
Mr. Trump has given conflicting reasons for dismissing Mr. Comey. At first, he said he relied on advice from Justice Department officials who were frustrated by Mr. Comey’s handling of the probe into Hillary Clinton’s email arrangement. Later the president said he had made up his mind to fire Mr. Comey before hearing from department officials, and suggested the Russia probe played a role in his decision.”
