CHINA/FOREIGN POLICY/NORTH KOREA/TRADE DEALS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The Senate’s top Democrat, Chuck Schumer, is calling on President Donald Trump to suspend the approval of all Chinese deals facing national security reviews in the U.S. until China acts more aggressively to press North Korea to curtail its nuclear and missile programs.
Though Mr. Schumer and other top Democrats have previously urged Mr. Trump to get tougher on China on trade—one of the few areas where Democrats thought they had an ally in the Republican president—this is the first time the New York senator has asked Mr. Trump to target Chinese investment in the U.S.
‘If China continues to passively address North Korea, I urge you to use your authority over the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to suspend the approval of all mergers and acquisitions in the U.S. by Chinese entities,’ Mr. Schumer wrote to Mr. Trump in a letter dated Tuesday that was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal…
Mr. Schumer’s request comes as Mr. Trump grows increasingly impatient with what he says is China’s failure to take sufficient action to curb North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic-missile programs. The president has repeatedly said he is willing to use trade policies to pressure China into doing more.”
