GUNS/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Donald Trump’s address to the National Rifle Association on Friday [4-28-17], the first by a sitting president since Ronald Reagan, represents a major victory for the organization and a symbol of its pull with the new administration.
But the NRA’s political clout contrasts with its more modest success in U.S. courts, where judges have upheld gun regulations against Second Amendment challenges more than 90% of the time since 2008.
Gun-rights activists say that trend is about to change. Mr. Trump’s speech at the organization’s annual meeting in Atlanta comes amid a buildup of legal power on both sides of the gun debate, and just weeks after the confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch, the first of many pro-gun judicial nominees activists hope Mr. Trump will tap to serve on the federal courts.
Emboldened by the 5-4 conservative majority on the Supreme Court, Second Amendment lawyers said they planned to file more lawsuits challenging gun regulation.”
