DEMS/ELECTION/IMPEACHMENT/RUSSIA INVESTIGATION/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “Impeachment is driving debate on the campaign trail now that special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian interference in the 2016 election is out. Although the 448-page long report did not take a stance on whether the president or his associates obstructed justice, the evidence presented of the president’s efforts to derail the investigation has revived talk of impeachment. President Trump, for his part, has said that he will fight impeachment proceedings up to the Supreme Court, claiming in a Wednesday [4-24-19] morning tweet that he ‘would first head to the U.S. Supreme Court.’ A 1993 Supreme Court ruling established that Congress has jurisdiction over impeachment proceedings and ‘and nowhere else.’ Democrats are divided on the question of impeachment. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi left the door open to impeachment proceedings, telling House Democrats in a Monday [4-22-19] conference call that ‘if that’s the place the facts take us, that’s the place we have to go.’”
