NANCY PELOSI/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “All day on Thursday [1-24-19] those around the nation wondered why President Donald Trump decided to postpone his State of the Union address. The president’s Wednesday [1-23-19] decision came across as a cordial announcement on his Twitter page shortly before midnight. That surprised some people…The president’s decision followed days of partisan bickering and a nasty back-and-forth with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who uninvited Trump from giving the high-profile address due to the government shutdown, now in its 34th day. After Pelosi wrote him a letter disinviting him from giving the address, Trump’s team started looking at alternatives. Some Republicans were pushing for the president to give his remarks in the Senate chambers instead of the House, which is traditionally where the State of the Union addresses are held. But Thursday afternoon from the White House, Trump addressed the speculation, saying he decided against another venue because that would be ‘very disrespectful’ to the State of the Union and thought Pelosi’s request was ‘actually reasonable.'”
