MEDIA/TRUMP AS PRESIDENT: “The uproar over the revocation of CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s ‘hard pass,’ which grants physical access to White House grounds and is an essential tool for any reporter on that beat, passed quickly after CNN and Acosta immediately took the government to court and resoundingly won. But amnesia is dangerous, particularly constitutional amnesia, and we cannot let it slip into yesterday’s news. The next rounds of the White House war on press freedoms are going to be even more dangerous. The government continues to claim broad authority to deny reporters access to the White House for asking tough questions. (That, by the way, is their job.) Making matters worse, the White House continues to adhere to a dangerous position: that the decision to revoke a hard pass doesn’t raise any constitutional issues because there’s no First Amendment right of access to the White House, and that a revocation is legally indistinguishable from actions that may well be wholly within the government’s discretion, such as to whom to offer an exclusive or whom to call on at a press conference.”
