ATTORNEY GENERAL/JEFF SESSIONS/NEW YORK: “Attorney General Jeff Sessions appointed Geoffrey Berman, a law partner of White House ally and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, to be the temporary U.S. Attorney in Manhattan, the Justice Department said Wednesday [1-3-18].
The announcement included 16 other interim top prosecutors for districts around the country, and followed a lengthy process to nominate new U.S. Attorneys. In March 2017, Mr. Sessions asked all of those previously appointed by former President Barack Obama to resign, but the White House has yet to nominate permanent replacements for many offices, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey and Los Angeles.
The No. 2 officials in those offices had been serving as the acting U.S. attorneys, but those terms expire on Thursday.
The new appointments are temporary, lasting only 120 days, and would need to be made permanent by either a judge or by a nomination from the White House and confirmation by the Senate.”
