MILITARY: “New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday [8-16-17] urged acting Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy to remove names of Confederate generals from streets on the Fort Hamilton military base in Brooklyn.
In a letter to Mr. McCarthy, Mr. Cuomo said the streets in question—Stonewall Jackson Drive and General Lee Avenue—’are named for leaders in the Confederate army who fought to protect slavery.’
In the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday, officials across the country have faced calls to remove monuments and names of Confederate generals from public spaces like streets and plazas.
‘Given the events of this week, including the violence and terrorism perpetrated by white supremacists in Charlottesville and the resulting emboldening of the voices of Nazis and white supremacists, I now strongly urge the U.S. Army to reconsider its decision and I call on them to rename these streets,’ Mr. Cuomo wrote.
The Army didn’t comment Wednesday.
In June, four members of Congress sent a letter to the Army saying the names were insulting because the generals ‘fought to maintain the institution of slavery.’ “
